SCOTLAND'S FIRST ABA SCHOOL FOR
CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

ABA is a very successful behavioural approach to teaching children with autism. There are ABA schools all over the British Isles. Now a group of parents is hoping to set up the first ABA school in Scotland.

It would be modelled on the Tree House School in London, which has received very positive Ofsted reports and has achieved National Autistic Society autism accreditation.

Highland Developmental Co-ordination Disorder Group are privileged to have Dr Amanda Kirby as key note speaker at the Culduthel Christian Centre, Inverness on Friday 11th May 2007. The event will run from 9.00 a.m. until 4.00 p.m. Dr Kirby has been practicing as a GP in Cardiff since 1994 and is Medical Director of the Dyscovery Centre, a leading UK referral point for assessment of dyspraxia. She has written a number of best selling books on DCD including "Dyspraxia, the Hidden Handicap".

UPDATE ON EDUCATION LAW - GLASGOW
SEMINAR - MONDAY 14th MAY 2007

This seminar will be of interest to everyone concerned by education, whether they be teachers, managers of education services, solicitors acting for local authorities or for children and/or their parents or indeed anyone concerned by law and policy in this area. An understanding of the basic structure of the law will be assumed.

The speaker is Sir Crispin Agnew of Lochnaw Bt QC, whose specialist practice advises and acts in education matters.

THE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT NEEDS TRIBUNALS FOR SCOTLAND - GLASGOW
SEMINAR - MONDAY 5TH NOVEMBER 2007

The Tribunals exist as a way of compelling education authorities to meet the additional support needs of children and young persons in relation to their school education. This conference looks at the "nuts and bolts" of what cases are covered by the Act, how to take a case to the new Tribunals, etc. If you work with children or families, work within education, or a parent or carer with concerns about whether childrens needs are being met this seminar will be of interest to you.

Speakers for this event are:-

  • Sheriff George Jamieson - a convenor of the Additional Support Needs Tribunals for Scotland and also of the Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland, also a part-time Sheriff and part-time Immigration Judge.
  • Iain Nisbet & Louise Melia - from the national Education Law Unit at Govan Law Centre. To date Iain and Lou are the only Solicitors to have presented cases before the Additonal Support Needs Tribunals.
  • Janys M Scott - Advocate, Vice-Chair Advocates' Child and Family Law Group.
  • Lynn Welsh (TBC) - currently Head of Scottish Legal Affairs at the Disability Rights Commission.
